Prevalence studies of youth and of problematic users

The following prevalence tables fall into two sections: firstly those dealing with youth and the schools population, and secondly those dealing with the population of problem drug users.

Studies of youth and the schools population

Table Prevalence-1 deals with self-reported prevalence in a number of different schools surveys by country for various years according to availability. It shows prevalence rates for lifetime (ever-) use of cannabis, inhalants and other volatile substances, amphetamines, ecstasy, LSD and other psychoactive substances as well as cocaine and heroin. Table Prevalence-2 deals with information similar to Table Prevalence-1, but for the prevalence of use of any psychoactive substance in the past month, the past year and over lifetime, the last separately for males and females. Information on 'Use patterns' comprises the percentage using first at age 13 or before, the perceived availability of drugs and the percentage, separately for males and females, who have used 40 times or more.

  • Table Prevalence-1. School surveys: Lifetime prevalence of psychoactive substance use among 15-16-year-old students
  • Table Prevalence-2. School Surveys: prevalence of cannabis use among students aged 15-16 years

Studies of the problematic drug use population

Tables Prevalence-3 and Prevalence-4 present summary information respectively on the estimated numbers of problem drug users and the corresponding prevalence rates of problem drug use. Estimates are made by a variety of methods in each country, and data are presented for the most recent years available. The fuller tables on which the summaries are based can be found in the annex to the statistical bulletin.

Bibliography

The final table gives the data sources for the studies reported in the tables of schools surveys.
